Welcome to the CFPA

As a non-profit association, we are a membership of Foster and Kinship Parents, dedicated to supporting each other and advocating for the betterment of Children in Care. We not only provide support to Foster and Kinship families, but offer a number of activities for these children and their Foster families, among other initiatives.

We Are Proud To Offer

Benefits to becoming a member are many! Renewed in January of each year, membership gives you access to all the activities put on by the CFPA, our newsletter, opportunities for donated tickets to many entertainment events, not to mention an amazing support network!

Interested in joining us for an upcoming event? Activities are at no-cost for members, but we need to hear from you if you are coming, so we can accurately plan. Sign up for an upcoming activity here; you’ll be glad you did and we look forward to seeing you!

Road Signs

The CFPA has many resources available to foster families. Information on advocacy for children, connections for teenagers, child protection, indigenous and metis services and much more.

We know this journey can be exciting, rewarding, exhausting and trying. Mentoring provides readily available peer support, through confidential, trusting discussions and the sharing of ideas to ensure the best outcome for the children in your care.

As an organization, the CFPA provides many services to our member families. These service include telus spark passes for families to use, a free clothing boutique of gently used items, and a free store of well-loved, quality toys. We are also very excited to announce a new partnership with Airdire Project Linus; an organization that creates new, hand-made blankets for children.

Some Sad News

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Norm Brownell. He was a founding member of our Association in 1968, and together with his wife Marie, fostered hundreds of children during their 50 years of service, and impacted so many foster families along the way. Our hearts go out to Marie and their family; he will be missed.

Looking for Support?

Please join the CFPA in partnership with the AFKA for our monthly fireside chat on the first Thursday of the month @ 7 pm. We are excited to have engaging and relevant presenters every month and are guaranteed to have an open and candid dialogue. Come ready to ask and share. We look forward to connecting with you! Supplemental training certificates will be provided.

Celebrating This Year’s Awards Recipients

Greetings to all our Foster and Kinship Families!

The month of October is recognized as Foster and Kinship Caregiver Appreciation Month in Alberta. Here in the Calgary Region, we celebrate during the third week of October which is National Foster Family Appreciation Week.

We have a long-standing tradition in Calgary of gathering today at City Hall to watch our flag being raised in honour of all of you. Our flag is still being flown today, even though we are not gathering again this year. Yet this is exactly what we celebrate and acknowledge in each of our families: your resiliency and ability to navigate and meet whatever challenge comes your way. You, our Foster and Kinship families, continue to step in the gap for the most vulnerable infants, children and youth, providing a safe, stable place and helping to heal the pain through your relationships with them and their families. You are the 24/7 intervention for those in your homes.

That is why our flag continues to fly at City Hall, and why this week’s observances are so important. We are forever grateful to all our families and those who continue to support us in so many ways. May this week be an extra encouragement to you.

With deepest appreciation,
Jo Busse, President
Calgary and District Foster Parents Association

Caring for children in care and their foster families.
